Moss and Bone exists to restore depth, sensuality, and symbolic thinking to everyday life through publishing, gathering, and aesthetic experience.
About Us
Marla
Born with the unfortunate expectation that life ought to have a plot and that the plot should have a happy ending, Marla has spent most of hers looking for kindness and meaning in places where it may or may not actually exist. Trained in the science of administration and the art of bureaucracy, she eventually escaped into writing, editing, and other occupations where excessive curiosity could plausibly be described as a professional asset. She is interested in obscure history, folklore, being outdoors, speculative fiction in all forms, the intersection of art, politics, and culture, and the strange and wonderful things people do for love.
Needless to say, Marla is a romantic in the old and occasionally catastrophic sense of the word. She believes beauty matters, joy is as necessary as air, and sexual chemistry remains one of the few forms of magic for which no further evidence is needed. She reads promiscuously, researches compulsively, dresses somewhat unnecessarily, and has a weakness for sprezzatura in all its forms: rumpled linen, a bespoke suit, improbable confidence, and people who appear to have arrived interesting by accident. She remains suspicious of cynicism, committed to whimsy, and stubbornly convinced that life should contain more enchantment than it generally does. This may explain Moss & Bone.
Nadine
Born in the wilds of an agrarian utopia, Nadine self-entertained as a child. The same has proven true for grown-up Nadine, with only a smattering of mild mind-altering substances in her formative years to help. Trained in art, curious of human interactions, and bolstered by the sex drive of a teenage boy, her imagination was then, and continues to be, quite raucous. After many years of digging the metaphorical ditch while believing it was the way to a happy ever after, she realized not-too-late that it was all a load of fuckery and resigned from giving a shit. Her absolute best advice to anyone is to become ungovernable.
Nadine will not take sides, she loves both cats and dogs equally. Coffee is non-negotiable. Creativity, in any form, is also non-negotiable. If she doesn’t ask your opinion, she doesn’t want to hear it and believes that all adult consensual love is super duper. The natural world has, is, and will always be, what makes her heart flutter, well, besides a good cocktail, a better book, and a most cherished friend.
